Honoring the Past, Preserving the Legacy

After spending 10 years in the Washington, D.C. area, our founder returned home to North Carolina with a renewed focus on family, roots, and remembrance. As she began learning more about her ancestors and visiting their burial sites, she was struck by the condition of many headstones , including those belonging to my own family.

The maternal grandmother’s headstone had become illegible and the paternal grandmother’s resting place is lost to time and nature. That experience lead to the creation Sankofa Solutions LLC as many families want to care for their loved ones’ resting places, but simply don’t have the time, ability, or resources to do so.

Out of that realization, Sankofa Solutions LLC was born a way to help families preserve the dignity, beauty, and memory of those who came before them.

The Meaning of “Sankofa"

The word Sankofa comes from the Akan tribe in Ghana and means “to retrieve.”An Akan proverb teaches that “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.”For me, that message is deeply personal. It represents the importance of returning to the past to honor it — to remember what matters, and to keep those memories alive.At Sankofa Solutions, that’s exactly what we do. We provide professional gravestone cleaning, restoration, and maintenance services for families who haven’t forgotten their ancestors and wish to preserve their stories for generations to come.
